Volunteers
One-on-one tutoring photo
Our programs could not operate without the commitment of a large number of volunteers - up to 200 volunteers in any year. Trained volunteer tutors provide one-on-one support to students and families, and provide library and office help as well.

For every paid hour of work at Prospects, volunteers give almost three unpaid hours.

Students

Prospects' students are adults who need literacy upgrading. They may be adults who have experienced years of failure, and who have been labelled in ways that suggest they cannot learn. We know they can.

Students with learning disabilities may have average or higher intelligence levels. Disabilities include learning problems with auditory discrimination, visual perception, sequencing, and decoding and comprehension of text.

Fifteen percent of Prospects' students are developmentally disabled. This group is especially in need of support because of the current emphasis on encouraging people with disabilities to live as independently as possible.

Our students represent a broad cross-section of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal people and immigrants. About 25% of our students speak English as a second language.

As well, whole families participate in our family literacy programs.
